Handymen
A handyman takes care of the small jobs around the home that are too fiddly to do yourself and too small for a specialist trade. One visit can clear a whole list.
What a handyman can do for you
- Assemble flat-pack furniture and fix wardrobes to the wall
- Hang shelves, mirrors, pictures, curtain rails and blinds
- Mount a TV on the wall
- Adjust doors and windows that stick or don't close properly
- Replace door handles, hinges and cupboard fittings
- Reseal around baths, showers and sinks
- Small repairs to floors, skirting boards and tiles
When you need a specialist instead
- New sockets, circuits or anything inside the fuse board: an electrician
- Leaks inside walls or under floors, and new pipework: a plumber
- Anything involving gas: a registered gas fitter
- Repainting whole rooms: a painter
- Cracks that keep growing, or work on load-bearing walls: a builder or structural engineer
Describing the job
Most handymen charge a minimum per visit, so put all your small jobs into one request. For each one, include:
- What needs doing, with a photo
- The wall type if you know it: concrete, brick or plasterboard. It decides which fixings are needed
- Whether you already have the parts and fixings, or they should bring them
- The size and weight of anything to be mounted, such as a TV or a heavy mirror
- When you are home to let them in
Before you hire
- Ask whether they charge by the hour or by the job, and what the minimum charge is
- Ask whether they will give you an invoice
- Check that they bring their own tools, and agree who buys any materials
- Read reviews from people who actually hired them for similar work
