Painters

Painters and decorators repaint walls, ceilings and woodwork, and do the preparation that makes the finish last. Most of a good paint job is the work you don't see: filling, sanding and priming.

What a painter can do for you

  • Paint walls and ceilings in single rooms or a whole home
  • Strip old wallpaper and hang new
  • Fill cracks, repair damaged plaster and smooth uneven walls
  • Paint doors, frames, skirting boards and radiators
  • Treat stains from smoke, water or mould before repainting
  • Paint balconies, fences and exterior walls

What affects the quote

  • The wall and ceiling area, and how high the ceilings are
  • The state of the surfaces: cracks, old wallpaper, flaking paint or damp
  • Big colour changes, since dark to light needs extra coats
  • Whether the rooms are empty or furniture needs moving and covering
  • Who supplies the paint, and which quality

Mould and damp stains come back through new paint unless the cause is fixed first. If a wall is damp, find out why before you book a painter.

Describing the job

A clear description gets you faster replies and quotes that hold. Include:

  • Which rooms, with approximate floor area or wall measurements
  • Ceiling height, especially in older buildings with high ceilings
  • The current state of the walls, with photos in daylight
  • Whether you will be living there while the work is done
  • The colours you want, or that you need advice
  • Your deadline, for example a move-in date

Before you hire

  • Ask whether they work as a registered business and will give you an invoice
  • Get a written quote that lists the preparation, the number of coats and the paint to be used
  • Agree who protects floors and furniture, and who cleans up afterwards
  • Ask to see photos of recent work, or read reviews from people who hired them
